Claire Ladds Readers’ Club News: July 2025

27th July 2025 by claireladds Leave a Comment

Hello, and welcome to this month’s news from my writing desk. And, I am rather stunned to say, it genuinely is from my writing desk!

If you have followed me on social media, or read previous blog posts I have written, you may have the distinct impression that I have somewhat of a loathing for my desk. You would, given everything that I’ve said about it previously, have drawn an accurate assumption that I can’t stand it. I’ve had this desk for around two decades now, and I have spent the bulk of that time avoiding sitting at it for any extended period (apart from November 2014, when I decided to challenge myself to write 50,000 words of three different novels. Short version: 115,000/150,000 words were completed, and I didn’t write a thing during December; one of the novels eventually became The Secrets That Haunt Us, several years later. The other two continue to languish in a ‘Book drafts’ folder on my computer).

Back to the desk situation: I took it upon myself to make what may turn out to be a monumentally brilliant decision (I don’t have many of those, so bear with me). I decided to tell myself that I want to write at the desk, and that anywhere else just won’t be as good, as useful, as practical, as… I’m sure I’ll keep adding to the list as time goes on. So far, it’s working, with the odd exception of the times, usually later in the afternoon, when I find myself gripping at my knees in some kind of mental rebellion. That, I’ve realised, is my indicator to tell myself, ‘You are now genuinely sick of looking at this room. Get out of here. Now. Before this brilliant decision you’ve made falls apart like one of your homemade biscuits.’ I don’t make great biscuits. At that point, I handwrite in an armchair with the TV on and calm myself down with a cup of tea. Or three.

This ludicrous but apparently workable process has enabled me to produce an almost complete structure to my new work-in-progress, and 10,000 words of the actual book, along with an array of scenes and character studies that may work themselves into the novel where appropriate. So far, so good. I’ve also completely fallen in love with my main characters and walk around, thinking what they might do, say or ponder in various given situations. I even drew up a shopping list for one of them the other day (it seemed to primarily consist of pizza, cereal bars, tea bags and a collection of cocktails in cans. Not the world’s most arduously constructed shopping list, to be fair).

This month has also kept me extremely busy with Faber Academy’s Writing a Novel (Online) course. I am utterly thrilled and delighted that I chose to apply for a highly competitive place on this course. I won’t go into details of the course itself, as that’s Faber’s and not mine. What I will say is that being on this course has reignited a blazing fire inside me for fiction that I had feared was in potential peril of snuffing itself out due to the current exhausting content of my day-to-day life. It’s fabulous being able to connect with, and support, other writers who are all working with the same end goal as me, dealing with similar emotions about their work, having moments of despair and epiphany about their writing. All of this also includes our wonderful tutor for the course, also an extremely experienced writer and teacher who is immensely helpful and astute with comments about our writing and our novels in general. The feeling of being in this together makes the process less isolating than it can be, sometimes. Writing is, by its very nature, creation performed in isolation (as a rule): just the writer and the keyboard or pen and paper, and the ideas percolating inside their brain.

Books on sale or half price – but be quick!

Until the end of July, you’ll find ALL of my e-books on sale for half price on the Smashwords store. If you get your books from Smashwords, definitely hop on over to grab any of mine – and of other authors – that you’ve been meaning to get, while they’re 50% off the usual price. You’ll find the promo here: https://www.smashwords.com/shelves/promos/

If you buy your e-books on Kobo, you can grab a copy of my psychological suspense with a gothic-inspired undertone, No Deadlier Time, for a reduced price. This offer applies to the UK and Australia and New Zealand. Again, be quick – this sale ends on 31st July.

For short story lovers: A short story to read

As well as my new novel-in-progress, I’ve written several short stories over the last few weeks, which are all destined for various places, be that collections of mine, submissions to publications, or as part of my work-in-progress. For various reasons, I can’t share these with you, however…

In case you missed it on my blog, I have recently added a short story for you to read. This first appeared in That’s Life: Fast Fiction magazine in Australia a number of years ago, and is also included in my short story collection, The Reason for Everything. The initial spark for this piece of fiction was prompted by a memory I have of being very tiny, a toddler possibly, and locking my mum out of the house by somehow sliding across a heavy bolt that went across the bottom of our door (I don’t believe that bolt remained in that position for long afterwards!). I have a snapshot, but vivid, recollection, of Mum climbing back in through the kitchen window which, luckily, she had open, since she was using the twin-tub washing machine on a hot day.

If you’d like to read the story, you’ll find it here: https://claireladds.com/2025/06/29/short-story-instinct/

Until next time, happy reading!

Claire Ladds Readers’ Club News: June 2025

22nd June 2025 by claireladds Leave a Comment

Image shows black strip on brown background and stack of books. Text says Claire Ladds Readers' Club news.

Welcome to the very first Readers’ Club monthly update post, here on my website. After lots of careful deliberation, I’ve decided to make my news, writing updates, information on special offers and new releases, as well as all my other bookish conversation, available and accessible to everyone with no need to sign up and read.

So, what news do I have for you this month?

Writing updates

You may, or may not, know that I have chosen to make a permanent return to writing literary fiction, and in particular psychological fiction, in which the characters’ thoughts are front and centre in the story.

After spending some time in the (sometimes rather strange) recesses of my brain, thinking hard about my next big project, I’m now currently in the full throes of planning a new literary fiction novel. The ideas for this book have been lurking in my head in disparate pieces for years, and finally they are melding into a story I am extremely excited to write. When I wake in the morning and my first thought is of the characters in the story, then I know I’m working on the right project!

Moreover, I’m thoroughly delighted to announce that I am going to be writing this book during my time as a tutee on the Faber Academy ‘Writing a Novel (online)’ course. This is Faber’s flagship course and I’ve been assured that places on this course are highly contested, so I’m extremely honoured to have been offered a place. It’s going to be thrilling to be writing under the advice and guidance of extremely experienced writers and tutors, editors and agents.

I begin this exciting new adventure tomorrow and I cannot wait to see how my ideas progress and how the book grows during this time, under such experienced guidance. I am also very much looking forward to spending online time with other writers on this course. I went through the course schedule yesterday and, as I got to the end of reading, my heart started to sink. If anything tells me that this is the path I should be taking right now, then that moment is it. I already get the feeling that the seven months I spend on this thrilling new pursuit will feel like it is gone in a flash.

Book news

Image shows book cover of Beneath the Flesh by Claire Ladds (forthcoming book). A moon shines down on a row of houses. Bats fly in the sky. There is a light on in an upstairs window. Text also states: a darker minds crime and suspense novella.

If you’ve read any of my Darker Minds series, you may be pleased to hear that I have plans to release another book in this collection. I am making intense edits and revisions to Beneath the Flesh, my former welcome gift from a time when it was necessary to sign up to access everything ‘Readers’ Club’. If you have read the original novella, you will find this new version similar in places and somewhat different elsewhere. I’m hoping to release this book towards the latter stages of the year, if everything goes to plan. I’ll keep you updated on the progress of this forthcoming release.

Offers for Kobo VIPs

This is a heads up for you if you are a VIP member of Kobo. I have a 40% off offer coming up on some of my books between 23rd and 27th of this month: my Darker Minds digital boxset, my psychological suspense novel, You Know You Shouldn’t, and my collection of short stories, The Reason for Everything. Keep a lookout on your emails from Kobo if you are a Kobo VIP member.

That’s all my news for June. I’ll be back with more Readers’ Club news next month, when I hope to have an update on the return of my paperbacks, as well as a huge Smashwords offer. In the meantime, feel free to have a wander about this section of the website. You’ll find all my previous blog posts here, and more Readers’ Club ones are on their way.

Until next time, happy reading!

Hers or Mine: a New Psychological Suspense Thriller OUT NOW!

23rd May 2023 by claireladds Leave a Comment

I am beyond excited to tell you that Hers or Mine, my latest psychological suspense thriller, is available to buy from today! This is the first of several psychological suspense books I have for you in 2023, and I really hope you’ll love reading them.

So, what’s my new book about? Well…

COULD YOUR SECRETS BE THE DEATH OF YOU?

To the neighbours, Lucy and Andy are an ordinary couple with good jobs and a quiet life. But they’re hiding a dark secret. And it’s tearing them apart.

Seven years ago, you took my life away. And I want it back.

Life as Andy’s wife isn’t what Lucy thought it would be. Andy has become obsessive. It’s as if she’s a prisoner. Their secret has turned Andy into a manipulative control freak, and Lucy stays in hiding, inside the house. Her business will fall apart if she doesn’t do something, and she’s mortified by Andy’s serial philandering since their secret took hold of them in its vice-like grip. So, when a leaflet arrives for a hotel designed for struggling creatives, Lucy is desperate to persuade Andy that going there, for a break and to give her a chance to sort her head out, will make things better.

Andy has issues of his own: the temptation of an affair that he’s trying to keep under control, Lucy’s increasingly problematic behaviour, and the guilty knowledge of what he did seven years before. But when Lucy threatens to reveal their secret, he has no choice but to let her out of his sight. What harm can a few days do?

The time is coming. The plan is in place. And you’ll be here soon.

But Andy begins to regret his decision. Letting Lucy go off alone might have been really stupid. Can she keep the secret safe? How dangerous is Lucy’s behaviour? When Andy gets a disturbing phone call from his wife, he’s determined to go and get her back.

But at the hotel everyone is hiding secrets and telling lies. Someone is playing a twisted game. And they have murder in mind.

No one knows you’re here. No one knows who you really are. And no one will know if you disappear forever…

A twisty psychological suspense novel. It’s game on – and it’s about as personal as it gets. When everyone is lying, who do you trust?

You can find Hers or Mine on a whole variety of online bookstores, and you can find them all using the button below.

If you prefer to get your books for your local library or a library app, you can do that, too! Just request Hers or Mine from your librarian or through your preferred library app.

I’m currently working on the paperback and hardback, and both should be available in the near future.

BUY HERS OR MINE

Happy reading (and I hope – in the nicest possible way – you get some shivers of suspense up your back, too! 😁)!

The Secrets That Haunt Us: Read an Extract (Do You Love Prologues?, Part 1)

4th February 2023 by claireladds 1 Comment

It’s February – the month in which love abounds, obsession comes to the fore, and… murder? Well, as you would expect from me, love, obsession, murder – they all combine in my books!

Okay, so this is a bit off-topic for Valentine’s month (you’d think!), but I have a question for you. Do you love prologues in your dark fiction, be it crime, mystery, psychological thrillers or suspense? They have a bit of a love-hate relationship with readers, and over time I’ve seen some quite passionate discussions on social media about them!

Personally, I love them – with the caveat that they do need to have a purpose, a genuine reason for being there, as far as the story is concerned, and also provide the reader with that all-important ‘extra’ which makes elements of the book clearer on a whole different level. Because of their purpose, they can have a variety of functions. For instance, they can set a scene for something that comes later (sometimes called foreshadowing), or provide the reader with a snapshot of the past which influences the book as a whole. They can hide a clue to whodunnit by providing just enough information for the reader (even when the reader doesn’t know it yet!), or ultimately deepen the reader experience by providing that ‘aha’ moment about a character or incident later on, which wouldn’t have been there without the prologue. They could even be dreams or memories of a character who is very much rooted in the ‘now’ of the book, and these may impact the story in all sorts of ways.

I thought it would be fun to give you a taster of some prologues in my novels, seeing that I’ve told you I love them so much. So welcome to a four-part mini-series of extracts from my books, where you can read the prologues I’ve used to begin some dark, obsessive stories – and each and every one with murder at its heart. Maybe you can guess why I’ve used a particular type of prologue, and what purpose it serves in the overall story.

We begin with a twisted, dark version of love: The Secrets that Haunt Us, my dark women’s fiction novel, full of love, obsession, revenge and, ultimately, murder. If ever there was a story of many loves gone wrong, it’s this one! This prologue takes the form of a series of letters, which appear to have been written shortly before the ‘present day’ of the story itself.

Please note that, as my extracts are crime-related books or dark fiction of some kind, they are suitable for an adult readership. Please read responsibly.

Happy reading!

Claire

The Secrets That Haunt Us

TUESDAY 29TH SEPTEMBER 1970

My Emmeline,

I have been watching. Waiting. I know your face like I know my own. I know your heart like I know mine. I know everything about you. Did you truly believe you could escape my soul? We are entwined, you and I. You live within me. And I live within you.

Anything you ever wanted I gave to you. A perfect life. Everything was perfection. But you spoiled it. You spoiled everything.

Did you really believe that I would remain dead? To you, of all people? You are my obsession. My every waking thought.

Do you remember our games of chess? How you moved your pieces around the board? You have moved many pieces in the last 30 years. It’s my turn, don’t you think?

You wanted to destroy all you should have loved. It will happen. The time is nearing. We always have to pay our debts to love, don’t we?

I am coming. You are forever my Cathy; I am forever your Heathcliff. You can never escape me. And I will not rest until our torment is over.

A.

FRIDAY 6TH NOVEMBER 1970

My lovely, dearest, darling Julia,

I have agonised over how to begin this letter. I have no idea how to explain, except to say that you have been in my thoughts since the second I last saw you. I watched your tears as I went away, and I need you to know that I have never got over that sight of you.

I wish more than anything that you can forgive the way I left. There were reasons, and they are very complex. I was unable to tell you about them then. I want to tell you everything now. The whole truth. But not in a letter.

I have never left you. I have kept watch over your life. Your troubles, which made me ache for you, my wonderful, darling girl; your marriage; your unhappiness. You ARE unhappy, aren’t you, my beautiful Julia?

I need you to know that the love I had for you then remains exactly as it was. It has never changed within me, not even through all the years we have been apart. Do you feel it? In the way you always said you could? I know you do. Every day when I awake, I reach out, only to find you are not there. Do you reach for me, too? For years, I have wanted to take your hand and stroke your face with my thumb – do you remember that?

I am back in the house. I had to. I know how much you loved it. And I want you here, beside me, in it once more.

Say you will return to me. Please. Even if it is just for one day, so that we can say goodbye. I don’t want to say goodbye ever again. Do you?

Please reply to me. And please destroy this letter. It is very important that you do, my darling girl.

You are in my dreams, always.
With all the love I have always had for you,

Alex. x–x–x

SATURDAY 5TH DECEMBER 1970

My sweetest Julia,

I knew you would not fail me. I knew the moment I told you where I was that you would write. And write you did. Over and over!

You will never know what it means to me that you wrote just how much you still love me. Your forgiveness makes everything all right. I did not expect such a torrent of letters. Every one is held against my heart as I struggle with my daily life.

Please, do not cry. There were tears on your letters, darling girl. Please do not feel that your circumstances now mean that I would not want you back in my arms once more. I have always wanted a perfect baby. You can give me the chance. Please say you will.

There are reasons that I am unable to explain more clearly why I left as I did. If anyone found this letter with that explanation, then I would be in extreme danger of needing to vanish once more. I know you do not want that, do you, not now? Did you do as I asked? Did you burn the letter? Please say that you did. I don’t want to ever have to leave you, ever again. Every moment spent without you has been torture. You know how much I adore you. You belong to me. I need you with me. Without you here, my life is worth nothing.

I dreamed of us last night, lying here, your head on my chest while I read you poetry and that passage of Jane Eyre you love so much. The one about the invisible cord that fastens two hearts. There is an invisible bond between us, Julia. You have always known it, haven’t you? It cannot be broken and it pulls us together again now.

Please, my angel, say you will come. I need to see you. To hold you. I want to feel your lips on mine.

Write to me. Say you’ll come. And please burn this letter. Do not fail me.

With every drop of love and passion I have within me for you,

Your very own,

Alex. x–x–x

SUNDAY 28TH FEBRUARY 1971

Julia, my angel,

Such torrents of letters! You never need fear, I have not forgotten you, I have not changed my mind. I have been making preparations for your arrival, that is all.

It breaks my heart to know how much you have missed me. I am so, so sorry. I promise, I will tell you everything once we are together again. I think of you, and of that moment, endlessly.

Knowing you want to be with me is the greatest honour you could do me. You have no need to worry about money, my sweetest girl. The contents of the envelope inside this letter will cover all the costs of your travel. You will notice that the ticket is for next Saturday, and that it is one-way. Do not ever go back, my beautiful one. You will always be free to leave me, but I do not want you to. Oh, you have no idea how much I want you to end your days here.

My heart is ready to explode at the very thought of you on the train. Soon, my angel. Soon everything in our lives will fall into place. Only promise me you will be on the train.

Promise me. If circumstances prevent me meeting you at the station, know that I am being very careful in case we are seen, and that I will not be far away. Ultimately, you know where to find me. I will be waiting. Tell no one you are coming. No one. Please. It is important.

Remember to destroy this letter.

I will see you on Saturday. I am counting the seconds until you are with me. Then I will truly show you what love means to me.

Until then, my darling girl,

Alex. x–x–x

MONDAY 1ST MARCH 1971

My Emmeline,

The time is almost upon us. Our final battle will soon commence. It will be checkmate. Our story will end the way it was always fated that it would.

You really believed you had escaped me, didn’t you? You should have made sure I was dead. It will be your biggest regret. I promise.

Forever yours, just as you have always been forever mine,

A.
